Research

The overall aim of the research programme is to make research knowledge available and to facilitate change, which promotes conditions for sustainable peace. The research work is contextually oriented and always carried out in cooperation with local partners. LPI conducts scientific research primarily from a Christian ethical perspective on matters concerning international conflicts, peace and justice.

LPI’s research projects are conceived both as “thematic” projects, administered by the office in Uppsala, and as integrated components of the three Conflict Transformation Programs: Horn of Africa, Republic of Congo and Democratic Republic of Congo.

LPI engages researchers from around the world to carry out specific projects. LPI projects and programmes focus on three broad areas:

1. The role of religion in conflict and peace.
2. Human rights and economic justice.
3. Nonviolent conflict transformation.

All activities should address local needs, and these are often communicated to LPI through a direct appeal, or through intermediaries such as churches, NGOs, donor agencies or governments. This is a key element to LPI, which was set up to respond to requests from churches and local people for support in their reconciliation and peace building work.

When LPI becomes involved, it conducts research firmly rooted in the local context. Depending on the results of the research, further action is taken in the form of communication of research results to constituencies (e.g. through publications); and whenever feasible, initiating a new cycle of “action” research, or launching a conflict transformation project. Thus research informs action and action informs research.
